Mission & Vision
The Belarusian Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (BSBMB) is a public and voluntary organization and its mission is promotion of further development of biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry of biologically active compounds, biomedical and pharmaceutical chemistry, related fields and biomedical sciences, as well as innovative application of the results of scientific research in practical medicine, agriculture, biotechnology and other sectors of the economy of the country.
The pivotal task of the Society is support of creative initiatives and to help enhance the educational level in scientists as members of the organization.
Key Activities
BSBMB arranges general meetings with both national and international invited speakers and young scientist symposia every second year and awards prizes to young researchers (best posters, best oral presentations). The meetings of young scientists were arranged in 2016 and 2017 and the materials were published. The First Belarusian Biochemical Congress “Current Problems in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology”, which contributed much to the revival of the Society, was held in 2016. In 2018, the 2nd Belarusian Biochemical Congress, under the same title, was held on May 17-18.
The International Belarusian-Lithuanian-Polish Workshop on Post-translational Modification of Proteins was arranged in 2017. In the year 2017, the Belarusian Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was published for the first time.
In November 2018, Grodno hosted the 1st Belarusian-Polish-Lithuanian conference “Frontiers in Life Science. Signaling and Metabolism dedicated to the 250th anniversary of academician Andrzej Sniadecki”. The conference materials were summarized in issue 2 of the Belarusian Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
BSBMB supports travel for PhD students to participate in conferences.
History
BSBMB conducted its activities from 1968 to 1998. Thereafter the Society was re-founded in 2016. At the 2017 FEBS Council meeting, the Society was elected as an Associate Member of FEBS from January 1, 2018.
Membership
BSBMB has 187 members (2019), mainly representatives of institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Belarusian universities with biological and medical profiles.
