Professor Joan J. Guinovart

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Professor Joan J. Guinovart, a distinguished scientist, visionary leader, and cherished colleague.

Joan was an emeritus professor at the University of Barcelona and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), Spain. His groundbreaking contributions to glycogen metabolism and his legacy as the Founding Director of IRB Barcelona (2005–2018) have left an indelible mark on the molecular life sciences community in Europe and worldwide.

Joan’s commitment to promoting scientific collaboration extended far beyond his laboratory. As President of the Spanish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) from 1996 to 2000, he played a pivotal role in its growth and strengthened its international presence. Under his leadership, the influential SEBBM Magazine was launched, with Joan serving as chief editor from 1997 to 2012.

Within the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), Joan served as Congress Counsellor (1997–2005), where he introduced a standardized model for FEBS Congresses. As a member of the FEBS Executive Committee, he was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the establishment of the European Research Council. Later, he contributed to the FEBS Science and Society Committee, advocating for the integration of science into broader societal contexts. Joan also chaired the committees for the successful FEBS Congress in Barcelona (1996) and the joint FEBS and IUBMB Congress in Seville (2012).

His vision for fostering collaboration between FEBS and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) led to the first joint IUBMB–FEBS Congress in Birmingham (2000). His efforts paved the way for periodic joint meetings and strengthened ties between these two influential organizations.

In recognition of his contributions, Professor Joan J. Guinovart was awarded the Diplome D’Honneur by FEBS in 2007, an honour that recognizes the exceptional contributions of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists who have provided significant service to the Federation. In 2024 he was awarded the Israel Pecht Award, the FEBS recognition award for outstanding contribution to the molecular biosciences community that was introduced with the aim of honouring individuals whose remarkable efforts and dedication have greatly enhanced the activities of their respective FEBS Constituent Societies and fostered impactful collaboration with FEBS.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Joan’s gentle personality, vibrant and inspiring spirit, and readiness to share a joke lifted the atmosphere in any company. He was a great and supportive mentor, always willing to share his experience with younger colleagues, offer advice, and encourage their efforts.

Joan Guinovart’s profound contributions to science, tireless advocacy for international collaboration, and unwavering dedication to the scientific community will continue to inspire future generations. He will be deeply missed by colleagues, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched through his work.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Professor Joan J. Guinovart’s family and express our deep appreciation for his remarkable impact on FEBS.
