ÖGMBT was established in 2008 by merging three independent Societies representing scientists from different areas of Life Sciences. The structure of the society consists of four sub-organisations located in different regions of Austria, with the main office located in Vienna. The location of the society’s annual meeting is rotated between the cities Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna.

ÖGMBT became a member of FEBS in 2009; one of its parent organizations (OGBM) was a member from 1964.
