The Bulgarian Biochemical, Biophysical and Molecular Biology Society

Mission & Vision

The Bulgarian Biochemical, Biophysical and Molecular Biology Society (BBMBS) aims to promote and encourage scientific cooperation between biochemists, biophysicists and molecular biologists and to give information to members about national and international scientific events.

BBMBS supports the organisation of National Biochemical Congresses, and Balkan Biochemical and Biophysical Days. BBMBS was one of the societies that established FEBS in 1964. BBMBS has a section for young scientists; for them our society organises courses to introduce new methods and the latest achievements in biological sciences. At these events they are also allowed to introduce their investigations. The most interesting works are published in proceedings books.

Key Activities

• BBMBS has an annual meeting and scientific and social meetings also during the year.
• BBMBS has established a “Prof. Todor Nikolov” prize for active members and outstanding scientists.
• We are not able to give fellowships due to financial constraints.

History

BBMBS was established in 1956, and has been a member of FEBS since 1964.
The first organization of Bulgarian biochemists was registered in 1956 as a Section of Biochemistry of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. It emerges as a successor to the traditions and active activities of the Biochemistry Circle at the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine. The initiative for this was a group of enthusiastic scientists, postgraduates and students among whom the names of B. Koichev, D. Bakalov, Dg. Pashkov, G. Saev, A. Hadzhiolov, R. Tsanev, T. Nikolov and others had to be mentioned. The first chairman, who was extremely active in organizing the work in the Section, is Assoc. Prof. Dosyu Bakalov. He chaired the Section from 1956 to 1963. From 1963 to 1981, the chairman of the Section was Prof. T. Nikolov, and after that, Prof. A.A. Hadzhiolov (1981-1990), Assoc. Prof. M. Stambolova (1990-1994), Prof. Ilya Pashev (1994-2001), Prof. Ivan Ivanov (2001 – 200 6) and Prof. Diana Petkova (since 2006).

Membership

The current number of members of BBMBS is 90 (2015). BBMBS accepts non residential scientists as members; usually these are Bulgarian scientists who are working and living outside of the country.
